Analysing from the tourist guide perspective
I consulted someone in my clinic in Lakeside who was a tourist guide by profession. He was a middle aged man and Rai was his surname. He worked as a tourist guide for 15 years. He was brought to my clinic as he fell on roadside as he was drunk in a wedding party of someone he knew.He had sustained minor head injury with a cut injury on his head. His dress were wet with blood.Without any delay, we cleansed and stitched the wound. After giving all the medications, he changed his T-shirt brought by his friend. That day, it was Saturday and I had time to talk to him after he was comfortable. As he knew I had interest in tourism sector , he also wanted to talk to him. I ordered tea for both of us. I wanted to hear what does he have to say about tourism sector. He told me few important lines which I think is relevant to know by all of us sothat it might be of value when the concerned people read this , this might guide them.
1. Don't replace foot trails with highways
On a foot trail, thre are many people. dependent on it. Constructing highways and making the destination short eliminates the fun of journey that required few hours or few days of walking. Tourists also could see villages, culture and way of life .Not against building highways , but he meant to preserve old foot trails where several thousands people liked, such trails have to be valued.
2. Don't modernise the old and traditional. equities
Making house and village modern does not help attracting tourists. They should be as they were. We should not forget our dress, culture and way of life. People come to see such things.
3. Establish the trekking route
Newer routes have to be explored and added.
4. Don't forget tourist guide and their. families
Tourists guide and porters have a big contribution to tourism sector , but they are not valued. And their importance is under-estimated. They have a big role to sustain this tourism related industry which provides a major support to our economy.
5. Make a policy Listening to people concerned in that area for years and years
The voice of tourists guide need to be heard of while making different policies and rules. If we are building any big project related to tourism industry, they should also get benefit. Like how we value the manpower of middle east in collecting remittance, tourist guide has a huge impact on tourism industry. The way they communicate , the way they deal with foreigners has made the impression of Nepali ever smiling, ever friendly and ever welcoming. Thanks to them.
He showed utter disrespect towards politics as their voice is unheard of. Their quality of life is not improved despite of working for 15 years in tourism sector which is a very long time. Still he has difficulty paying his daily bills of his family.
We wish our leaders change and start doing good. We hope the tourism industry changes when our future leaders work wisely and selflessly.
